“Where can I toss this?
My experience at Havilla Children Centre (Kenya, Nairobi) started with this simple question. During my stay I tried to make the children aware of this problem that has become very important nowadays. I organised a workshop in which we built small vases by using recycled materials. Through this practical activity we worked together to understand that everything can be reused and recycled, that every object can be entitled to have a second life, that the environment is our “home” in which we live every day and therefore it must be protected even in the small things.
You cannot understand some situation without experiencing them. Interviewing the people of the Kibera slum, the students of the University of Nairobi and relevant stakeholders, such as the Nairobi City Council and the United Nations, gave me a large amount of information about waste management, about recycling and on what has been done until now, but above all on what is still missing, especially regarding the awareness of the population of Nairobi and its slum.”
