DESIGN OF A SCHOOL IN NAIROBI – KENYA

Design of the new school complex of Havilla Children’s Center

The Architecture Team, in collaboration with the NGO Havilla Children’s Center has designed a new complex that will house, besides the already existing school, a primary school for the children of the Kibera slum, one of the biggest ones in Africa. Currently the Center houses 85 children, from 3 to 7, among the poorest of the slum, the majority of which are orphans.

The project aims at set an example for the responsible use of local resources, for technical and social improvement and for the involvement of the local community in school construction. The design is based on the choice of modern, recycled and local materials creating a project that promoted a sustainable urban development within the slum. One of the fundamental aspects of the project is that it can fit the needs of the NGO in terms of space and costs: the school was designed as a system based on following improvements in order to support the educational path of the students and to allow a gradual raise of the necessary funds for the construction.
